Rod Hardy

Woodcarving, Sculpture & Knife Making

Ohio artist Rod Hardy has a wide range of skills and talent to draw from. From his incredibly true-to-life woodcarving & sculpture work, to forging and creating a variety of knives, Rod brings meticulous attention to detail and his love of the art to the forefront of each piece.

Rod hand carves each of his sculpture pieces, then completes the piece by painting in the final details, adding hair coat or feathers as needed, bringing the piece to life such a way that it almost fools the viewer into thinking the piece truly capable of independent movement.

We are delighted to currently offer several of Rod’s wildfowl sculpture pieces, as well as quite a few examples of his knife making work, and even the occasional (extensively) hand-carved walking stick, which always garners lots of attention during the brief time it remains here.

From Bone-handled Bowie knives with Damascus steel blades to antler-handled Flint and Obsidian knives done in Eastern Woodland Native American styles, the knives currently available from Rod’s workbench are all masterpieces in their own right. When creating the flint knives, Rod has taken care to do so using only traditional methods and materials- knapping the flint and obsidian for the blades himself; finding just the right deer antler handle for each blade and shaping the handle if necessary, then binding the blade to the antler with sinew in the way it would have been done traditionally, resulting in a beautiful yet perfectly functional work of art.

Rod resides with his wife in nearby Canton, OH.
