Ciders and Sculpture…

Hello everyone! As some of you may know, the gallery is currently closed for extensive renovations, so rather than waiting until we re-open to hold events, we decided to collaborate on an event with The Cider Press, a wonderful new restaurant and cider bar here in Millersburg, just two doors down from the gallery.

To the end, we invite you and yours to join us Wednesday, May 31 from 5 - 9 PM for an evening of sustenance for both body and soul! Along with enjoying a delectable buffet style dinner created by the chef at The Cider Press, you’ll have the opportunity to meet wood sculptor Steve Burelison. You’ll be able to take in a number of his new works displayed only for this evening, hear about the inspiration behind their creation, and we hope you’ll even find one that speaks to you- these pieces will be available to purchase.

With dinner being served, space- and the number of guests we can accommodate- will be limited, so be sure to reserve your tickets now via the links below!

PLEASE NOTE: If you are unable to reserve tickets via the Eventbrite links included here, please feel free to call us directly at (330)600.8712 or email us at newtownegallery@gmail.com to reserve your spot on the guest list. We’ll be happy to accommodate you.

Giving back is an integral part of our mission here at New Towne Gallery. With that in mind, $5 from every ticket sold will be donated to the Holmes Center for the Arts, our local organization for building and promoting the arts in Holmes County!

Still Seeking Grace -by Steve Burelison

I sculpt in an interpretive style, giving the viewer the opportunity to step into and and complete the sculpture in their own mind, relating to factors in their own lives. I work primarily with found wood that I pick from the woods and river on my property in southwest Ohio, but I am always looking for interesting pieces wherever I’m at. With each piece I try to create motion and emotion.

One of my hopes and goals is to move people with my sculptures, so how a piece touches you can be both physical and emotional. There is no better feeling for me than to have someone see my pieces for the first time and exclaim in awe, not because of the beauty of my work, but because it moves them in some way. Some may purchase the piece to take home and enjoy every day, some simply enjoy the moment. Both choices carry the same significance to me. I feel I have moved someone, maybe made a difference or lifted them up in some way. That’s what it’s all about for me.

-Steve Burelison

BAKERY AT ZOAR -J.D. Titzel

Artist Statement:  I paint out of a love and appreciation for the things I paint. I have a wide range of interests, so there is a wide range of subject matter. Art for me is a way of sharing an appreciation for our world. Giving viewers a chance to contemplate and maybe be thankful for what is often ignored in everyday life.

Light can bring out the innate beauty of subjects. Light striking an object defines that object. Values (the gradation from black to white) are of prime importance in a painting. In an oil painting, I first paint it using only raw umber, separating the values. The second layer consists of a patchy color, and this layer will tell you what colors and values are needed for the final layer. In a watercolor painting, I build it up slowly in very thin layers of paint. Some areas of the painting are two or three layers, some areas are ten or more layers. This gives the painting nuances and depth a single color cannot. The average watercolor takes 70 hours to complete. I have spent over 250 hours in a single painting.

Art is a means to better understand the world around us and to express the values and attitudes that are important to the artist, and to our society, our culture.
