Powder Horn with turned wooden end cap finished in red milk paint, with chip carving & turned wooden plug, turned horn cap & wooden stopper.
Extensive scrimshaw: the words THE PASSAGE OF HALLEY’S 1758 along the inside curve of the horn, set within a border. Next to this is the alchemical symbol of the Ouroboros Sun and the words Memento Mori, 17 six-pointed stars w/rays, the moon in crescent, a winged hourglass, a skull. Followed by a pair of wings surmounted by a crowned skull, vines, thorns and roses.
Facing side: various alchemical symbols, numerous stars, crescent moon, sun. An extensive English cityscape, with two gentlemen in towers observing the passage of the comet with telescopes. Extensive detailing.
