Paintings of Amish farmscapes in Holmes County, OH, are the focus of this body of works by Douglas Unger. Pastels on paper and oils on canvas, in a contemporary realism style. Speaking as a someone who grew up here in Holmes County, I can say with certainty that Doug not only captures the minute details of the local countryside but does so with unique beauty and depth. Doug is an environmentalist and Professor Emeritus at Kent State University, where he taught for 35 years.

Doug’s education in the arts is extensive, with a BFA from Cleveland Institute of Art, his MFA from Syracuse University, as well as having attended the Cape School of Art in Provincetown, MA.

Doug’s work is included in numerous collections, from some of the most notable like the Smithsonian collection, and the Library of Congress collection, to private and corporate collections like Haliburton Oil Company, the Comptroller of the United States Currency, the Kimberly Clark Corporation, Huntington National Bank, the Ohio Arts Council, and many others too numerous to list here.

Douglas Unger has received countless awards for his work, from museums such as the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Akron Art Institute, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Canton Art Institute, the Parkersburg Art Center, the National Endowment Prize, the Ohio Heritage Award, and many more.
