Dan Jackson

Woodcarving & Sculpture

Dan Jackson is a woodcarver from Erie, PA whose work continues to delight his many collectors and fans. A retired master plumber, Dan began carving shorebirds in the 1980’s, and from then his skills as well as his passion for carving continue to grow.

With birds as his main subject these days, Dan spends a lot of time watching and studying the birds that visit the many bird feeders filling the backyard of the home he shares with his wife Carol. “I love the birds. We feed them and watch them all the time,” Dan states.

Dan begins the process with a block of pine or basswood, roughing out the shape he wants on a bandsaw, then uses a Dremel saw and sanding blocks to achieve the desired form. He finishes each piece by painting the birds in their often brilliant and varied colors, then mounts the birds on natural driftwood he collects from none other than Lake Erie itself. It can take Dan about 8 to 10 hours to carve a bird, taking into consideration the additional time needed to complete the piece.

Dan and Carol, who in turn creates beach-glass jewelry and hand sewn handbags, enjoy spending time beach combing together. While Dan collects driftwood for his bird sculptures, Carol searches for beach glass for her jewelry.

Dan’s bird carvings bring color and cheer to any space they inhabit, with the driftwood they’re mounted on bringing a piece of the natural world to add warmth and a unique authenticity. We hope you will enjoy them as much as we do!
